About ECHS
East Central High School has been home to generations of Hornets since opening its doors in 1951, when just six students made up the school’s first graduating class.
Today, ECHS offers students a wide range of opportunities to learn, lead and prepare for their future through academics, career and technical education, fine arts, athletics, student organizations and more.
With a proud history and an eye toward the future, East Central High School continues to create opportunities for students to discover their interests, develop their talents and build the skills they need for college, career and life.
Our History
East Central High School opened in 1951 on the outskirts of San Antonio, with just six students making up its first graduating class. Since then, the school has grown alongside the East Central community, welcoming generations of students and today celebrating hundreds of graduates each year.
Over the decades, ECHS has continued to evolve to meet the needs of a growing and changing community while building a strong tradition of academic, athletic, fine arts and extracurricular achievement. Through all that growth and change, one thing has remained constant: the pride generations of students, staff and families have in being Hornets and in calling East Central High School home.
Hornet Traditions & Achievements
Hornet pride extends from the classroom to the competition field, stage and community.
East Central High School has a long tradition of student achievement, including championship athletics, award-winning academic and career programs, and opportunities for students to earn college credit and industry credentials while still in high school.
ECHS is home to a strong Health Science program, an award-winning Agricultural Science program and student teams that have earned recognition for designing and building electric vehicles.
The school also proudly celebrates its 1995 undefeated Boys Basketball State Championship team as part of its rich athletic history.
